Elevate your margarita game with this Blackberry Sage Margarita! This blackberry margarita cocktail combines the smoky notes of mezcal with the sweetness of blackberries and the earthiness of sage!

Mezcal is the perfect spirit to compliment the rich blackberries, but if you aren't a fan, you can easily swap it for tequila! If you are looking for more fun margarita options, try this Frosty Frozen Cherry Margarita, Lavender Margarita, or this Fresh and Spicy Pineapple Margarita.

Why You Will Love This Recipe:

    1. Unique and delicious flavor: The smoky and complex nature of mezcal compliments the juicy sweetness of blackberries and the herbal notes of sage, creating a delicious cocktail.
    2. Visually gorgeous: The deep purple hue of the blackberries imparts a stunning margarita, making it a showstopper at gatherings or special occasions.
    3. The perfect drink for Blackberry fans!

    Key Ingredients

    • Mezcal: Mezcal is a spirit similar to tequila. It is also made from agave, but it is cooked in pits in the ground, which gives it its signature smokey flavor. For this recipe, I used Del Maguey Vida Mezcal which is known for its smokey flavor and for being pretty decently priced.
    • Simple Syrup or Agave Nectar: this cocktail has just a bit of sweetener to balance and complement the lime juice perfectly. You can use agave, simple syrup, or even honey, whatever you have on hand.
    • Lime Juice: no margarita is complete without lime juice, and fresh squeezed is always best!
    • Blackberries: I love blackberry flavor, and this margarita is full of muddled blackberries.
    • Sage: Sage is an earthy herb and fits so well with blackberries and mezcal, but you could also substitute for basil.

    How to Make This Recipe:

The blackberries, sage, and agave, being muddled in a glass cocktail shaker.

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the fresh blackberries and sage leaves until well crushed and their flavors are released.

The lime juice, agave, and mezcal have been added to the shaker.

Add mezcal, lime juice, agave, and a handful of ice cubes to the shaker.

The cocktail being poured from the shaker into a glass.

Shake the mixture for about 15-20 seconds to chill and incorporate the flavors. Strain the margarita into a glass filled with ice.

The cocktail garnished with blackberries and sage.

Garnish with a sprig of fresh sage and a few blackberries.

    Tips for success:

    • If you prefer a sweeter margarita, adjust the agave quantity according to your taste preferences. Add a little more if desired.
    • To enhance the smoky essence of mezcal, consider using a mezcal with a higher smokiness level, such as one made from Espadín agave.
    • For a refined presentation, double strain the margarita using a fine-mesh strainer to remove any fruit or herb particles, ensuring a smooth and elegant texture.
    • To extract maximum flavor from the sage leaves, gently clap or slap them between your palms before muddling.
    • Experiment with different varieties of blackberries, such as Marionberries or Boysenberries, to add unique flavor dimensions.

    Substitutions:

    • If mezcal is unavailable or if you don't like the taste, you can substitute it with tequila for a more traditional margarita flavor.
    • If fresh blackberries are not in season, frozen blackberries can be used. Thaw them slightly before muddling.
    • Sage can be substituted with other herbs like thyme or basil to create your preferred herbal infusion.

    FAQ

How do you muddle without a muddler?

You can easily muddle fruit with a blunt-ended wooden spoon.

Raised in the heart of Kentucky, I come from a long line of passionate cooks and bakers. The kitchen was always the heart of our home, where we transformed vegetables into delightful dishes and crafted pies and cakes that emerged from the oven. This tradition of coming together through food and cooking inspired the name of my blog, The G&M Kitchen – 'G' for my father's family, the Giltners, and 'M' for my mother's family, the Millers.

I also believe if a recipe is missing something, it's probably bourbon.
