    This pumpkin spice old fashioned is the perfect fall bourbon cocktail! It combines bourbon, an easy pumpkin spice syrup made from pumpkin butter, and spicy bitters. It's a dreamy mix of fall flavors that make it perfect for any festive occasion.

    I love old-fashioned cocktails and think they are the perfect fall drink. Making a delicious old fashioned is an art form and takes just the right balance of ingredients to get it right, whether it is a flavored version like this banana bread old fashioned, or the classic version like in this article on How to make a perfect old fashioned.     Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in any old-fashioned, so using the best one that goes well with pumpkin spice key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon our favorite.

    🥃 WHAT BOURBON IS BEST FOR THIS COCKTAIL:

    Old Forester 1920 is my choice for this drink when I want a treat, but any sweet bourbon will do. I also like Woodford Reserve. 

    Pumpkin spice syrup: this is such an easy syrup to make becuase it uses just pumpkin butter and water. Pumpkin butter is pumpkin that has been cooked down with sugar and loads of spices. It truly is the definition of pumpkin spice!

    Bitters: both angostura and cinnamon bitters are used to give the cocktail a bit of spice.

    🔪 How to make this recipe:

    Pumkin butter and water in a small sauce pan ready to be cooked.
    1. Step 1: Step 1: Make the pumpkin spice syrup by combining 1 cup of pumpkin butter and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan. Cook until the butter has loosened (about 10-20 minutes). Then strain.

    ✨ Tips for success:

    Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your bourbon and syrup accurately. Also, using a cocktail stirrer is beneficial because it fits so well around the ice.

    Ice: Use a large ice cube because it melts slower and is less likely to dilute the drink.

    Store the leftover syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.

    Yes, you can! Batch this recipe by double or tripling the recipe in one large mixing glass, or you can prepare however many cocktails you would like in a pitcher, cover it and store it in the fridge until ready to serve.

    Description

    • 1 cup pumpkin butter
    • 1 cup water

     

    For the cocktail:

    • 1 ½ ounces bourbon
    • 1 ounce pumpkin spice syrup
    • 1 dash angostura bitters
    • 1 dash of cinnamon bitters

    Instructions

    1. Make the pumpkin spice syrup by combining 1 cup of pumpkin butter and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan. Cook until the butter has loosened (about 10-20 minutes). Then strain while still warm. 
    2. Add a large ice cube to a rocks glass (or ice to a mixing glass) and top with 1 ½ ounces of bourbon.
    3. Top with 1 ounce of the pumpkin spice syrup, 1 dash of Angostura bitters, and 1 dash of cinnamon bitters. Stir to combine.
    4. Garnish with star anise and a marigold. 

    Notes

    Store the leftover syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.

    Syrup makes enough for 6-8 cocktails.
