If you love banana bread, this is the cocktail for you! This banana bread old fashioned takes banana liqueur and Bourbon (two flavors that go so well together) and mixes them with a bit of brown sugar, walnut, and chocolate to make a sweet, elegant, and nostalgic cocktail!

We turned our The Best Chocolate Bourbon Banana Bread into a cocktail, and the results couldn't have turned out better! This cocktail is one that you will want to stop sipping.

A rocks glass with a banana old fashioned garnished with chocolate shavings and a banana chip, sitting on a green marble table.

Bourbon and banana are such a good flavor combination and such an underutilized profile. Bananas are also a prevalent flavor note in many bourbon whiskeys! One of our absolute favorite bourbons, Old Forester 1910, has a delicious hint of banana.

Making a delicious old fashioned is an art form and takes just the right balance of ingredients to get it right; just check out our How to make a perfect Old Fashioned post or this spiced cranberry old fashioned for a fruity version.

⭐ Why you will love this recipe:

    1. All the best flavors from banana bread in a cocktail! Bourbon, banana, walnut, and chocolate are a match made in heaven!
    2. Perfect for bourbon lovers! This a bourbon-forward cocktail that has hints of banana, walnut, and chocolate.
    3. So easy! This cocktail can all be mixed in one glass and ready within minutes.

    🥘  Key Ingredients:

The ingredients for the banana old fashioned sitting on a green marble table.

Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in any old-fashioned, so using the best one that goes well with the banana and chocolate is key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon our favorite.

🥃 What is the best Bourbon for this cocktail?

Old Forester 1910  is smooth and well-rounded and has notes of sweet oatmeal raisin cookie, milk chocolate, and caramel corn with a bit of spice. This smoothness and sweetness make it our favorite!

Banana Liqueur: we have opted for a banana liqueur instead of making a simple syrup because the liqueur packs more of a flavor punch!

Brown sugar syrup: we used a homemade brown sugar simple syrup that is 1 cup water to 1 cup brown sugar. But a store-bought version works great as well!

Bitters: We used both black walnut and chocolate bitters to give this cocktail a hint of walnut and chocolate! We found these at our local liquor store, but they are also available online.

    See recipe card for quantities.

🍽 How to make this recipe:

A large ice cube sitting in a rocks glass on a marble table.

Step 1: Add ice to a rocks glass.

A drip of syrup dropping into a glass filled with bourbon.

Step 2: Add Bourbon, banana liqueur, and brown sugar syrup.

A cocktail stirrer is Stirling the glass.

Step 3: Finish with the black walnut and chocolate bitters and stir.

A rocks glass with a banana old fashioned garnished with chocolate shavings and a banana chip, sitting on a green marble table.

Step 4: Garnish with chocolate shavings and a banana chip (optional).

    💭  Expert tips

Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your Bourbon and liqueur accurately. Also, using a cocktail stirrer is beneficial because it fits so well around the ice.

Ice: Use a large ice cube because it melts slower and is less likely to dilute the drink.

Make your own syrup: making your own brown sugar syrup is so easy and cost-effective. Just cook 1 cup water and 1 cup brown sugar until all the sugar has melted, then let cool.

The kitchen was always the heart of our home, where we transformed vegetables into delightful dishes and crafted pies and cakes that emerged from the oven. This tradition of coming together through food and cooking inspired the name of my blog, The G&M Kitchen – 'G' for my father's family, the Giltners, and 'M' for my mother's family, the Millers.

I also believe if a recipe is missing something, it's probably bourbon.
