    Passion Fruit Mint Julep

    Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This passion fruit mint julep is a refreshing and tropical twist on the classic mint julep! The combination of bourbon and passion fruit may seem unusual, but the fruit's tartness perfectly complements the bourbon's sweetness.

To make this delicious cocktail, you'll need fresh mint, passion fruit, simple syrup, and bourbon. The drink is mellow, fruity, and has become my new favorite mint julep!

A yellow passion fruit mint julep in a textured Art Deco glass sitting on a marble coaster.

Here's why you'll love this recipe:

The mint julep is the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby, and it's perfect for any Derby party or sunny day. The fresh mint and crushed ice provide a welcome relief when it's hot outside.

This drink pairs well with other fruity spring cocktails, such as the strawberry mint julep, or this traditional the best mint julep recipe, and is an excellent addition to any Kentucky Derby party!

A bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon surrounded by pass fruits, simple syrup and mint.

    These are the key ingredients:

    • Fresh passion fruit: Cut open two passion fruits, use the insides from one in the glass, and use the other to top off the crushed ice.
    • Bourbon: A top-shelf, high-quality bourbon is crucial for a delicious-tasting drink.
    • Fresh mint: This recipe requires a lot of mint. Some mint leaves are chopped up and added to the simple syrup, and several sprigs of whole mint are added to the glass for more flavor and as a garnish.
    • Simple syrup: This sweetener is made with equal parts water and sugar and adds just the right amount of sweetness to the cocktail.
    • Crushed ice: Use crushed ice for a traditional Kentucky Derby-style cocktail.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Here's how to make this recipe:

Mint and simple syrup in a glass on a marble coaster.

Muddle the mint and simple syrup in a glass.

The bourbon, passion fruit, and a little ice have been added to the glass.

Add bourbon, a little crushed ice, and the interior of one passion fruit. Stir.

The glass has been filled with crushed ice.

    Top with crushed ice.

Passion fruit has been added to the top of the glass.

Add the interior of one more passion fruit over the crushed ice, then garnish with a mint sprig.

    Top tips:

    • If making homemade simple syrup, do it ahead of time and let it cool thoroughly. You can make it a week ahead and store it in the fridge.
    • Make crushed ice by adding ice to a large ziplock bag and crushing it with a rolling pin or another sturdy kitchen tool.

    FAQ

You can use any bourbon you like! However, I suggest premium bourbon, and here are a few of my favorites for cocktails.
