Hocus Pocus Inspired Cocktail - I Put A Spell On You

This Hocus Pocus-inspired cocktail, I Put A Spell On You, is the perfect magical Halloween cocktail to celebrate the witchy season! It's a maple pecan old fashioned made with a homemade maple pecan simple syrup, and it embodies all the best fall flavors!

A maple pecan simple syrup mixed with sweet bourbon, bitters, and gold cocktail glitter makes this the perfect potent magical cocktail for the spooky season!

Two cocktails on a brown stone table surrounded by mini pumpkins and cinnamon.

    Why this recipe works:

I love Halloween and Halloween-themed cocktails; just check out my Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas and my Black Flame Candle! This one is based on the Disney classic Hocus Pocus scene when the Sanderson Sisters put a spell on a Halloween party by singing I Put and Spell on You! This is the ultimate fall cocktail, and it is exactly what I want to drink at a massive Halloween Party in Salem!

Ingredients for the Hocus Pocus cocktail on a brown stone table.

    Key Ingredients:

Bourbon: This is a bourbon-based cocktail, and the bourbon flavor comes through, so using a top-shelf, and high-quality bourbon is key to a delicious tasting drink. You can use any bourbon you like! I used Old Forester 1910 in this cocktail, but Willett or Angels Envy would also be good with these flavors.

Maple Pecan Syrup: This is an easy simple syrup made from maple syrup, brown sugar, and pecans.

Bitters: Bitters help to balance the cocktail. Any bitters will do, but for this I used Orange Bitters.

Gold Cocktail Glitter: This is what gives the drink its magical effect. I used Fancy Sprinkles Fools Gold Edible Glitter.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    How to make this recipe:

Ingredients for the maple pecan syrup in a saucepan.

Start by making the maple pecan syrup. Combine the brown sugar, maple syrup, pecans, and water in a saucepan. Heat on medium until the sugar has dissolved. Continue to steep the pecans for 5-10 minutes. Let cool and strain.

The bourbon, syrup, and bitters in a gold rimmed pumpkin glass.

Next, add the bourbon and syrup to a glass, and top with bitters.

Glitter swirled into the cocktail glass.

Add the glitter, stir, then top with ice.

Cocktail garnished with pecans and cinnamon.

Garnish with cinnamon sticks, pecans, and more glitter.

    Substitutions

This recipe is completely delicious, but a few things could be switched out based on taste and availability.

    • You can substitute the maple syrup for an equal part of brown sugar.
    • You could switch out the pecans for walnuts as well.
    • You can omit the bitters if you don't have any on hand.

    Equipment:

    FAQs:

What is the best bourbon for this cocktail?

You can use any bourbon you like! However, I suggest Old Forester 1910 or Angels Envy for this cocktail. But here are a few of my other favorites for cocktails.
    Buffalo Trace
    Woodford Reserve
    Four Roses Small Batch
    Knob Creek

How long will the simple syrup keep?

The syrup will keep for about 2-3 weeks in an air-tight jar in the refrigerator.
