Bourbon is my spirit of choice, and indulging in a bourbon cocktail is my favorite way to relax during the winter months.Ialso love a spin on an old-fashioned just like this: Bourbon Peach Old Fashioned, Bourbon Apple Cider Old Fashioned, or this Spiced Cranberry Old Fashioned!

    Key Ingredients:

The ingredients for the old fashioned on a purple marble table
    • Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in this cocktail, so using the best one that goes well with the gingerbread flavor is key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon is by far the best.
    • Brown sugar: Through testing, we've found that brown sugar syrup creates the best flavor and mixes and balances best with the bourbon. Brown sugar adds depth that matches the flavors in the bourbon.
    • Molasses: Molasses is a key ingredient in gingerbread and a rich and robust sweet flavor.
    • Spices: Ground ginger, cinnamon, all spice, and clove are added to the syrup to get the signature gingerbread flavor.
    • Bitters: bitters are flavor extracts made with alcohol and a variety of flavors and spices. They tend to be bitter or bittersweet and are made to balance out sweet or sour cocktails. In this recipe, we use orange and aromatic bitters, which are a delicious blend of spices.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    How to make this recipe:

The ingredients for the syrup in a glass pot.
    1. Step 1: Start by making the gingerbread syrup by mixing ½ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup molasses, 1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon allspice, ¼ teaspoon ground cloves, and 1 cup water. Let simmer for 10 minutes, then cool and strain.
The bourbon sitting in a glass with circle ice cube.
    1. Step 2: Next, add 2 ounces of bourbon, ½ ounce of gingerbread syrup, 2 dashes of orange bitters, and 1 dash of aromatic bitters.
The mixed cocktail in a glass on a purple marble table.
    1. Step 3: Stir to combine, and garnish with an orange.

    Tips:

Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your bourbon and syrup accurately. Also, using a cocktail stirrer is beneficial because it fits so well around the ice.

Ice: Use a large ice cube because it melts slower and is less likely to dilute the drink.

Store the syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.

    About Pate

Hi! I'm Pate, the blogger, recipe developer, and photographer behind The G&M Kitchen!

Raised in the heart of Kentucky, I come from a long line of passionate cooks and bakers. The kitchen was always the heart of our home, where we transformed vegetables into delightful dishes and crafted pies and cakes that emerged from the oven. This tradition of coming together through food and cooking inspired the name of my blog, The G&M Kitchen – 'G' for my father's family, the Giltners, and 'M' for my mother's family, the Millers.

I also believe if a recipe is missing something, it's probably bourbon.
