This frozen bourbon old fashioned is your favorite cocktail turned frosty and frozen! It's frozen orange slices, brown sugar syrup, frozen cherries, bitters, bourbon, and ice blended until smooth!

It's all the best flavors from a old fashioned turned into a delightful frozen summer treat!

A frozen old fashioned sitting on a pink marble table and garnished with a orange wedge and a fresh cherry.

🥃 What is an old fashioned?

This drink is traditionally made by muddling sugar with water and bitters, then mixing that with bourbon whiskey and garnishing with an orange slice and a cherry (just like this How to make a perfect old fashioned). In this version, we are blending all those elements with ice to make a summer slush!

    Key Ingredients:

The ingredients for the frozen old fashioned on a pink marble table.
    • Frozen orange slices: frozen oranges make up the bulk of this drink, and their fresh orange flavor makes this drink taste so fresh and delicious. Peel an orange and place it in an air-tight container the night before you plan to make the cocktail.
    • Frozen cherries: a few frozen cherries are added to the mixture for a little punch of cherry flavor.
    • Light brown sugar: light brown sugar syrup creates the best flavor and mixes and balances best with the bourbon.
    • Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in this cocktail, so using the best one that goes well with the orange and cherry flavors is key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon is by far the best. My Favorite for this sweet frozen version is Angels Envy.
    • Bitters: bitters are flavor extracts made with alcohol and a variety of flavors and spices. They tend to be bitter or bittersweet and are made to balance out sweet or sour cocktails. In this recipe, we use Angostura aromatic bitters, which is a delicious blend of fruit and spices.
    • Ice: a cup of ice adds volume and helps create that frozen texture.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    How to make this recipe:

Frozen orange wedges on a white plate.

Step 1: Start by freezing orange wedges until frozen.

The oranges, cherries, bourbon, syrup, and bitters in a blender.

Step 2: Add ½ a frozen orange (about 5 wedges), 3 frozen cherries, ½ ounce brown sugar syrup, 2 ounces bourbon, and3 dashes bitters to a blender.

The mixture has been topped with ice.

Step 3: Top 1 cup ice and blend until smooth.

The blended cocktail poured into a rocks glass.

Step 4: Pour into a glass and garnish with an orange wedge and cherry.

    Expert tips:

Peel a couple of oranges, divide into wedges the night before, and freeze.

Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your bourbon and syrup accurately.

If the mixture is too thick, add 1 ounce of water at a time until you have the consistency you want.
