This candied pecan old fashioned is so decadent, delicious, and absolutely full of pecan flavor! It's made with a candied pecan simple syrup with pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon that simmered until the syrup achieves a punch of pecan flavor.
Bourbon is my spirit of choice, and indulging in a bourbon cocktail is my favorite way to relax during the winter months.I also love a spin on an old-fashioned just like this: Bourbon Peach Old Fashioned, Bourbon Apple Cider Old Fashioned, or this Spiced Cranberry Old Fashioned!
Key Ingredients:
Pecans: I use whole pecans, and then after making the simple syrup, I bake them at 350 for about 20 minutes for a garnish, but you can also use a store-bought candied pecan as a garnish.
Brown sugar: Through testing, we've found that brown sugar syrup creates the best flavor and mixes and balances best with the bourbon. Brown sugar adds depth that matches the flavors in the bourbon.
Bitters: bitters are flavor extracts made with alcohol and a variety of flavors and spices. They tend to be bitter or bittersweet and are made to balance out sweet or sour cocktails. In this recipe, we use Black Walnut and Smoked Cinnamon bitters, which is a delicious blend of nut and spices.
Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in this cocktail, so using the best one that goes well with the pecan flavor is key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon is by far the best.
🥃 What is the best Bourbon for this cocktail?
Old Forester 1910 is smooth and well-rounded and has notes of sweet oatmeal raisin cookie, milk chocolate, and caramel corn with a bit of spice. This smoothness and sweetness make it our favorite
How to make this recipe:
- Step 1: Make the candied pecan simple syrup by simmering 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup water, 5 cinnamon sticks, and 2 cups pecans for 30 minutes. Let cool then strain.
- Step 2: Then add ice to an old fashioned glass and top with 2 ounces bourbon.
- Step 3: Next, top with ½ ounce pecan syrup, 2 dashes of black walnut bitters, and 1 dash of smoked cinnamon bitters.
- Step 4: Stir to combine and garnish with a candied pecan.
Tips:
Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your bourbon and syrup accurately. Also, using a cocktail stirrer is beneficial because it fits so well around the ice.
Ice: Use a large ice cube because it melts slower and is less likely to dilute the drink.
Store the syrup in the fridge for up to two weeks.
