This smashing pumpkin cocktail is essentially a pumpkin butter and bourbon smash! It's pumpkin butter mixed with bourbon and pumpkin spice sage syrup. The pumpkin and sage are such a perfect mix, and the sage provides some delightful earthiness.

Pumpkin is one of the best fall flavors, and it's really celebrated in this cocktail. I really like using pumpkin butter in cocktails, and I think it delivers the perfect pumpkin spice flavor. This pumpkin spice espresso martini and this pumpkin spice are old fashioned, but they use pumpkin butter to flavor the drink, and they are both so delicious.

The ingredients for the smashing pumpkin on an orange marble table.

    Key Ingredients:

Bourbon: Bourbon is the key ingredient in any bourbon smash, so using the best one that goes well with the pumpkin butter is key. A sweet but well-balanced bourbon is my favorite. I used Woodford Reserve for this version.

Pumpkin Butter: pumpkin butter is a pumpkin that has been cooked down with different types of spices and sugars; to me, it is essential pumpkin spice.

Sage and pumpkin spice: these are used to flavor the syrup, the sage especially adds some delightful flavor to the cocktail.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    How to make this recipe:

A small glass pot filled with sugar, sage, and pumpkin spice.
    1. Step 1: Start by making the pumpkin spice and sage syrup by combining 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice, and 2 springs of fresh sage in a small pot. Cook until the sugar has melted, and then let cool.
A mixing glass filled with ice, bourbon, and pumpkin butter.
    1. Step 2: Next add ice to a mixing glass then top with 1 tablespoon pumpkin butter, 1 ½ ounces bourbon, and ½ ounce pumpkin spice sage syrup.
The mixture has been stirred to combine with a mixing spoon.
    1. Step 3: Stir to combine then pour into a rocks glass with ice.

    1. Step 4: Garnish with fresh sage and enjoy!

These ingredients do/don't stand up well to freezing for X days/weeks/months.

    Expert Tips:

Suggested Barware: Use a jigger to measure your bourbon and syrup accurately.

Store the remaining syrup in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Raised in the heart of Kentucky, I come from a long line of passionate cooks and bakers. The kitchen was always the heart of our home, where we transformed vegetables into delightful dishes and crafted pies and cakes that emerged from the oven. This tradition of coming together through food and cooking inspired the name of my blog, The G&M Kitchen – 'G' for my father's family, the Giltners, and 'M' for my mother's family, the Millers.

I also believe if a recipe is missing something, it's probably bourbon.
