This Batched Freezer Door Old Fashioned is my signature old fashioned. Its perfectly balanced with brown sugar, cherry, bitters, and bourbon. Its deeply flavorful, and now ready to pour straight from the freezer. It’s everything I love in a classic old fashioned, scaled up for ease and longevity. Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just a chilly weeknight, this batch cocktail is always ready when you are.

Two old fashioneds sitting on a mirrored tray with a batched container in the back ground.

The magic is in the balance: brown sugar simple syrup for rich sweetness, a touch of syrup from cocktail cherries for depth, the perfect bourbon, and just the right blend of bitters. A splash of water adds a hint of dilution so it’s perfectly pourable and not too strong right out of the freezer.

Its my How to make a perfect old fashioned but scaled up and can live happily in a freezer-safe bottle for months, and serving it couldn’t be easier: just open, pour over ice, and enjoy. That’s it.

    • Perfectly balanced: Rich, smooth, a little sweet, and just strong enough.

    Key Ingredients

a bottle of old forester 1870 sitting on a mirrored tray.
    • Bourbon: Choose your favorite, but my go-to is Old Forster 1910 or 1870.
    • Brown Sugar Simple Syrup: its super easy to make and adds rich, caramelized sweetness.
    • Syrup from Luxardo or cocktail cherries: Just a touch brings extra flavor and depth.
    • Bitters: A mix of aromatic bitters for balance and structure.
    • Water: Just enough to pre-dilute for a smooth, freezer-pourable finish.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    How to make it!

cherry juice being poured into a jigger.
    1. Step 3: Then add 1 ounce of syrup from a Luxardo cherry jar, 25 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters, and 1 ounce of water.
The poured cocktail in a low rocks glass on a mirrored tray.
    1. Step 4: Serve garnished with a cherry and orange peel or store in the freezer.

    Tips:

Use a bourbon you really love, my favorite for an old-fashioned is the Old Forster Whiskey Row series.

    • Don’t skip the cherry syrup. It adds a subtle, beautiful depth without making it sweet.

    • Pre-dilution is key: The added water keeps the cocktail from being too hot right out of the freezer.

    • Want to dress it up? Add extra bitters like orange or cherry to give it an extra bit of flavor.

    About Pate

Hi! I'm Pate, the blogger, recipe developer, and photographer behind The G&M Kitchen!

Raised in the heart of Kentucky, I come from a long line of passionate cooks and bakers. The kitchen was always the heart of our home, where we transformed vegetables into delightful dishes and crafted pies and cakes that emerged from the oven. This tradition of coming together through food and cooking inspired the name of my blog, The G&M Kitchen – 'G' for my father's family, the Giltners, and 'M' for my mother's family, the Millers.

I also believe if a recipe is missing something, it's probably bourbon.
